Sustainable Packaging

Sustainable Packaging has been difficult to define since it can be looked at from various perspectives. In most situations there are relative degrees of sustainability and while our definition is consonant with a “perfect world”, we need to work toward this goal and develop solutions that get us as close as possible.

“Sustainable packaging uses materials that can be replenished in the environment, is reusable in its existing state or is readily recyclable, and at the end of its lifecycle can be naturally returned to the environment”.

In this context replenishment of materials, such as replanting trees for paper making or harvesting sugarcane for ethanol allows future generations’ access to the resources we enjoy today. In contrast to converting the package to a new or alternative use, reuse is preferable since there is minimal environmental impact. Recyclability is also a key aspect and the ability to return the materials to the environment with minimal impact is important.

So while the ultimate goal is to create packaging that fits this definition, we need to create a balance with business sustainability objectives that consider other criteria, as outlined in the graphic below:
